This concert is the beginning of our quatercentenary celebration of the music of Tomás Luis de Victoria (c.1548-1611), one of the very greatest composers, not just of the Late Renaissance but of any period. His vocal music is exquisitely crafted, blending a flawless sense of line with a forward-looking feel for both harmonic and dramatic effect, and more than deserves our intense exploration. Taking a cue from the dedication of our regular venue we begin with one of his most well-known works, the motet for All Saints’ Day O quam gloriosum and the mass setting that Victoria then based upon the same musical material. Equally ‘glorious’ are William Byrd’s motets in honour of All Saints, and the concert will end with two strongly contrasted masterpieces by Victoria – the reflective Salve Regina and the ebullient psalm setting Laetatus sum (I was glad) for choir in twelve parts. Not for the first time, we shall be supported by the rich sounds of the English Cornett and Sackbut Ensemble, who appear by arrangement with Chameleon Arts Management. We expect this series of concerts to be very popular – early booking is advised.
The concert starts at 7.30 and a glass of wine is included in the ticket price. Buy your tickets in advance to save money and to be certain of getting your seats; you can either call the box office on 020 8399 2714 or 020 3137 0376, or email us at vox@ripienochoir.org.uk.
